11:01:19 grega welcome to SE's for 2003 and beyond...
11:01:52 grega Let me start by saying that I have info on what changes have happened and may happen in the future..
11:02:24 grega but if anyone has found things that may be of interest here today, please speak up and share your info
11:03:07 grega ok.. first of all
11:03:52 grega and something that SEO's are aware of is that Yahoo is using Google's results even b4 their directory results
11:04:59 grega This will make a major change on how we design and build our webs and how we optimize our clients sites as well as our own
11:06:09 grega Site design that is "search engine spider friendly" is more important then ever
11:07:00 grega since it virtually all major search properties are now utilizing automated 'spidering' as the means by which to index and rank sites
11:08:13 grega content is now the supreme king
11:08:40 grega but you will still need to work with the rest of the web site as well to optimize it for the SE's
11:09:48 grega today nearly every major search property is powered by a spider based search engine.. not a directory
11:10:38 grega if the search properties are dominated by spider based search tools then your web had better be spider friendly
11:11:28 grega from history we learn that 'things' come full circle..
11:11:47 grega and it appears to be the same for the SE's as well
11:13:39 grega next.. and some of you may have some insight into this.. it appears that there are a few SE's and potential SE's that are either using or designing AI (artificial intelligence) as the base for their SE's
11:14:44 grega I noticed it last week with a guest host that robin hosted in regards to keywords
11:15:16 grega this person developed as keyword analyzer that is based on what he called AI
11:16:16 grega this is followed by a 'new' search technology developed by DolphinSearch inc..
11:17:13 grega the patented technology uses artificial intelligence to search for context and meaning, supposedly much like a human would
11:17:23 grega according to their CEO, Andrew Kraftsow, he says that he has taught computers to read language with a greater understanding then they did b4
11:19:11 grega they have teamed up with LexisNexis to market this new .. DolphinSearch technology
11:20:01 grega currently law firms are about the biggest users of this tech11:21:10 grega It appears that there will be more of this type of development in the SE industry as time goes on..
11:21:27 grega any thoughts on this from any one here?
11:23:28 rayphilip are any search engines using this technology currently?
11:23:53 grega just DolphinSearch ray..
11:23:56 chezparis Do you think this technology would significantly change the way we do SEO now?
11:24:10 grega and currently it appears to be very specialized
11:25:05 grega eventually chez, yes.. but I believe that we will be governed by the spidering search engine going into next yr
11:25:05 cindyt or will it just make us do SEO better?
11:25:45 grega Cindy.. that is always, or should be, out constant goal.
11:27:16 grega I believe, as I said earlier that with most all of the SE' s using spiders for the main results on the Big SE's we will need to optimize to meet that need
11:28:22 grega there have been some changes with Inktomi
11:29:00 grega they sold off their enterprise search business to Verity, Inc.
11:29:50 grega they are pretty much back to the bare bones company they were when they were founded in 1996
11:31:21 grega Inktomi plans to focus exclusively on web search... they plane to make some technology upgrade announcements shortly
11:31:48 grega Their biggest customer is still MS
11:32:16 grega MS uses them to power its MSN search site
11:32:42 grega but as we know.. there are a couple back doors into MSN
11:33:16 chezparis What are the back doors again
11:34:03 grega http://submitit.bcentral.com/msnsubmit.htm
11:34:31 grega chez.. there is the link I use for MSN
11:36:38 grega AltaVista is starting to make some changes.. to develop a new image for itself..
11:37:00 grega as well as giving its users some different options for search results
11:37:10 grega as you probably know..
11:37:50 grega AV has been struggling to recapture its former place in the SE's list of most used
11:38:06 grega They have redesigned the web site
11:38:37 grega that kinda looks like a take off of Google
11:39:28 grega some new features includes ad-free home page... with fresher search results..
11:40:05 grega an updated navigation for new publication and new tools for pinpointing relevant pages
11:41:19 grega AV has been losing market share over the last 2 yrs..
11:41:42 grega and they are attempting, in their own way to improve that market share..
11:42:54 grega especially since the major stock holder ( CMGI) has been divesting itself of the ailing business in order to improve its own cash flow
11:43:39 grega Like everyone else in the SE industry.. they are looking to become profitable
11:44:48 grega you will be finding several new items on their site .. including a new site called News 2.0..
11:45:16 grega this will give people the ability to search news publications by region, time period or topic
11:46:02 grega they will be adding more PDF files to their database
11:46:20 grega have more frequent updates of the search results
11:46:43 grega and have a couple of other advances
11:47:02 grega lets see if they can improve their market share ...
11:47:55 grega well, that is all of the current info I have..
11:48:55 cindyt Greg, I notice that Bruce Clay's relationship chart shows Google supplying only secondary results to Yahoo, but that is not correct. They are supplying primary results, yes?
11:49:21 grega Mr. Clay needs to update his chart
11:49:57 chezparis With all the given changes, what do you personally recommend we concentrate our SEO efforts on? Which Search engines/dir. and in what order of importance
11:51:00 grega I have noticed that yahoo is listing Google's results
11:51:26 grega and on the bottom , I think, of the page is where you can access yahoo's directory results if you wish
11:51:47 grega that is of course the same for google..
11:52:22 grega and recently I have noticed that AOL search has switched back to google results first on their list
11:53:33 grega google ..... ODP, which will help with popularity with google.. then all the web, which supplies Lycos... and then the others
11:54:26 cindyt Greg, am I correct in saying that MSN is probably the most searched engine, but Google has the most pages indexed?
11:55:19 grega Cindy.. I may be incorrect.. but I remember.. (memory getting worse as I get older) that google has the largest market share
11:55:31 cindyt for searches as well?
11:55:47 grega yes.. I believe so.. but don't quote me on this
11:56:00 journey Regarding dolphin search technology, "themed-based sites" will be important because of context, is this correct?
11:56:55 grega yes journey.. that is the info that I received
11:58:01 chezparis What do you mean by theme-based
11:58:14 cindyt relevant?
11:58:18 grega It uses this AI to search for context and meaning.. much like a human.. .according to the info I have
11:59:13 grega theme based is the content of the page.. and what it focuses on
11:59:49 grega Cindy.. are you asking if the content needs to be relevant to the theme?
12:00:17 cindyt No, sorry. I was wondering if you know if it is detrimental to be linked to/from less-relevant pages?
12:00:51 grega if you're speaking about google.. I would say yes..
12:01:03 cindyt Oh, the relevancy comment! Yes, I was asking if "theme-based" is basically the same as relevant?
12:01:16 grega but I don't think anyone knows how much that plays in the way you're ranked
12:02:40 rayphilip How will being linked to/from a less relevant page hurt your status as an :"authority"?
12:02:51 grega Cindy.. yes.. relevant content could be looked at as what the theme of that page would be
12:03:55 grega google has stated that a link to your web from a site that is related to your theme with be given more weight then one from just any ole site,,,
12:04:54 grega well gang.. we have gone past time.. which is great.. I really appreciate you all coming by to spend your time with me..
