engines are not all the same. They fall into two (in the main) categories:
'crawler based search engines' and 'human
powered directories'. You need to know which ones are which,

The industry is
changing rapidly. Search engines and directories have moved away from
free submissions to paid for services. Yahoo!
dropped free submissions for all businesses and now charges $299.00
(£210 GBP) and there's no guarantee that you'll be included in
the index. Looksmart - the other 'must
be found in' directory has changed its business model to a 'pay per
click' service.
Even the crawler based search engines are moving into 'paid for inclusion'
services. Inktomi is a major American database
which supplies search results to places like AOL
(America Online) and MSN (Microsoft Network)
amongst others. They now have a partnership deal with third party suppliers
like Position Technologies, where they
guarantee their Spider will visit your site every
48 hours and continue to do so for one year. Alta
Vista has a partnership deal with Infospider
to provide a similar service for paid inclusion and now Lycos
and Ask Jeeves also have 'pay for inclusion'
services. They all guarantee that they will index your web pages and
include them in their database - but if your site
isn't search engine optimised, you're actually paying to be in the dungeon!
There's no guarantee, even though you're now paying for inclusion, that
your pages will actually achieve a rank of any description. I'll explain
exactly how these services work; which ones to use; how much you'll
