Search engines are not all the same. They fall into two (in the main) categories: 'crawler based search engines' and 'human powered directories'. You need to know which ones are which, and exactly how they work in order to reach the top. For instance, Google is as distinct from Yahoo! as Alta Vista is to LookSmart.

The industry is changing rapidly. Search engines and directories have moved away from free submissions to paid for services. Yahoo! dropped free submissions for all businesses and now charges $299.00 (£210 GBP) and there's no guarantee that you'll be included in the index. Looksmart - the other 'must be found in' directory has changed its business model to a 'pay per click' service.

There's no guarantee, even though you're now paying for inclusion, that your pages will actually achieve a rank of any description.
